The memory of one of us

Ermanno Olmi, one of the great masters of Italian cinema, took his very first steps at Edison. Arriving at a young age at the company where his mother was already employed, he initially worked on recreational activities for the employees. With his first movie camera, he documented the construction of numerous power plants, developing a unique perspective that led him to become the director of the company’s Film Section. But it wasn’t just the industrial infrastructure that interested him: at the heart of his works were always the dedication and labor of the people, his colleagues, portrayed with sensitivity and care, anticipating the human and profound style that would define his entire filmmaking career.

Past and future meet at Porto Marghera

Through the collection of images from the Edison Photographic Archive, we have documented the complete renovation of the Marghera Levante thermoelectric power plant: over 250 shots tell the story of the industrial activity at this site by Montecatini, Edison, Montecatini Edison (later Montedison), and associated companies. Most of the images relate to production in the chemical, petrochemical, and steel sectors, as well as the places where the plants were built — without, of course, neglecting the human element.

A dialogue to build the future

The history of the Edison Group boasts collaborations with some of the most renowned names in Italian architecture and design: Bruno Munari, Franca Helg, Franco Albini, Achille Castiglioni, Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, Max Huber, Erberto Carboni, and Marcello Nizzoli are just some of the designers who, between the 1930s and 1960s, worked with us to design installations at the Milan Trade Fair, contributing to the success of the exhibitions. Today, we are once again engaging in dialogue with the design community to jointly find new solutions for a sustainable future.
