EDISON AND VERDALIA BIOENERGY SIGN MULTI-YEAR AGREEMENT FOR THE OFFTAKE OF 14 MILLION CUBIC METERS PER YEAR OF AGRICULTURAL BIOMETHANE FOR THE TRANSPORTATION SECTOR
Milan, June 24, 2025 - Edison announces the launch of a long-term agreement with Verdalia Bioenergy, one of Italy's leading operators in the agricultural biomethane sector, for the exclusive offtake of biomethane produced by by Verdalia’s portfolio of seven plants located in the Brescia province. The agreement is for the entire production capacity of these plants, totalling approximately 14 million cubic meters per year, to be allocated to the transport sector.
The biomethane supplied to Edison is derived from the processing of about 350,000 tons of livestock effluents and agricultural by-products not intended for human consumption per annum. Verdalia anticipates increasing production capacity at these plants by over 50% in the coming years, through planned investments.
"The agreement with Verdalia Bioenergy is an important part of our strategy that aims to increase the share of green gas in the portfolio, with a view to increasingly decarbonize energy production. With this collaboration, we strengthen our position on the Italian and European green gas market, particularly in the transport sector, traditionally hard to abate, confirming our role as a responsible operator committed to supporting its customers in their decarbonisation journey, through increasing shares of green gas, such as biomethane and bioLNG”, comments Andrea Qualiano, Head of Green Gas Origination & Gas Supply Portfolio Decarbonization at Edison.
"This agreement with Edison allows Verdalia Bioenergy to streamline and optimize its downstream activities by centralising the management of shipping, offtake and utility supply activities for our current operating plants into a single contractual framework. This enables Verdalia to focus on its core mission: to build and operate plants and produce Biomethane, BioCO2 and Bio Fertilizer with the ambition to be best in class in the sector in Europe" comments Cristiano Campi, Chief Commercial Officer of Verdalia Bioenergy.
Under this agreement, Edison will offtake Vedalia’s entire biomethane production for up to 10 years. At the same time, Edison will also supply the electricity and gas required for the operation of the plants, promoting an integrated and sustainable approach to the entire energy supply chain.
Biomethane is one of the pillars of the European energy transition, as highlighted in the REPowerEU plan, which aims to increase its production tenfold by 2030, reaching 35 billion cubic meters per year. Its environmental benefits include reducing greenhouse gas emissions, valorising organic waste and supporting the circular economy.
Edison is a major player in the Italian biomethane sector, holding approximately one-third of the national market share. In 2024, Edison sold LNG and BioLNG volumes sufficient to fuel 17,000 articulated trucks, delivering natural gas to about 500 refuelling stations throughout Italy; and continued the development of new capacity for the production of Biomethane and Biogas with a total of 8 plants under management, construction and authorization in Italy and Spain. The Group is actively engaged in a long-term strategy that integrates the production, procurement and marketing of green energy at the service of its customers' energy transition.
