Our green ammonia import terminals

With the goal of ensuring Italy and Greece access to future green hydrogen markets, we are developing two terminals for the import, storage, and cracking of green ammonia sourced from global markets: the North Adriatic H2 and Ionian Energy projects. Strategically located and designed, North Adriatic H2 and Ionian Energy can make a significant contribution to energy supply security in the Euro-Mediterranean area, while supporting its energy transition.

North Adriatic H2 Terminal

The North Adriatic H2 Terminal will be located in the Northern Adriatic and will serve the industrial demand for green hydrogen in the Marghera area, with a capacity of up to 1.7 million tonnes per year (equivalent to 3.3 billion cubic meters of hydrogen per year). It will be connected via pipeline to the future Italian H2 Backbone network, ensuring access both to local consumers and to the national and European systems. In 2024, the project has been included in the Ten-Year Network Development Plan (TYNDP) and candidate among the EU Projects of Common Interest (PCI). It is currently in an advanced stage of development, with feasibility studies and market activities already launched, and has received expressions of interest from both global market suppliers and hydrogen buyers.

Ionian Energy Terminal

The Ionian Energy Terminal, located in Greece on the Ionian coast, aims to establish a strategic hub for the import of green ammonia and its conversion into hydrogen, serving Greece, the Balkans, and Italy, with a capacity of up to 2.8 million tonnes per year (equivalent to approximately 5 billion cubic meters of hydrogen per year). The terminal will be directly interconnected with the H2Poseidon pipeline and with the future Greek and Italian hydrogen networks, ensuring flexibility and full integration into the region’s energy value chains. Included in the 2024 TYNDP and candidate among the EU Projects of Common Interest (PCI), the Ionian Energy Terminal has already completed the pre-feasibility phase and launched the feasibility study as well as market testing procedures, with the goal of strengthening energy security in Southeastern Europe and supporting the deployment of new green energy carriers.
