Energy from the Calabrian sun in a battery

A sustainable future where the energy from the sun can be stored in a battery and made available whenever it’s needed: introducing the 882 kWh storage system at our Altomonte photovoltaic plant in the province of Cosenza.

Thanks to a partnership with Electro Power Systems (EPS), Edison has entered the energy storage systems sector and has begun testing the viability of using batteries to combat the intermittency of renewable energy sources.

The Altomonte battery

The storage system stores energy produced by the Altomonte photovoltaic plant and makes it available when required, thus compensating for the inherent intermittency of renewable energy sources.

By bridging the gap between prevision and production, electricity storage systems such as the Altomonte battery system make it possible - when paired with photovoltaic or wind plants - to optimise the production of renewable energy, which obviously cannot be programmed. This helps to develop sustainable energy sources.

An immense power bank charged by the Calabrian sun

The new storage battery at the Altomonte power plant, located in the province of Cosenza, stores excess energy produced by the photovoltaic plant and then releases this when there is no sun, thus bridging the gap between energy supply and demand.

The photovoltaic power bank in numbers

The Altomonte power bank - which is seamlessly integrated with the surrounding area - is located in a container measuring 12 metres and weighing in at 5.5 tonnes. It features 108 lithium ion battery modules and has a total power of 550 KW.

Energy storage: the current picture

According to the European Association for Storage of Energy, Europe’s installed electricity storage capacity increased by 49% from 0.88 to 1.6 GWh between 2016 and 2017, building on improvements that began in 2015. 2018 growth should clock in at around 45%, thanks to exponential increases in new battery installations.
