La scala: zero-emissions at this year's opening night thanks to edison

Opening night at La Scala on December 7 will be eco-friendly.

The 80 tonnes of CO2 estimated to be produced for "Die Walkure" (including transport of the public) will be compensated for using wind energy. Also, the large screen showing the opera conducted by Daniel Barenboim in the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele octagon will be powered by batteries charged with  solar energy.  The project was realised by Edison, the company which in 1883 provided the electricity to light La Scala - the first opera house in Europe.  With this new development, it will be the first European theatre to plan a zero-impact opening night.
