Edison strengthens in hydroelectric sector by acquiring a mini-hydro power plants in Piemonte e Friuli regions

The deal, that is worth 34 million euro, increases the installed capacity of mini-hydropower sector of Edison by 35% with an increase of the average annual production of 70 GWh, equivalent to the average annual consumption of 25,000 households.

Milan, May 26, 2016 - Edison strengthens in hydroelectric, a key sector in the development strategy of the company, with the acquisition of nine hydroelectric power plants - including 7 in Piemonte and 2 in Friuli Venezia Giulia Regions [1]- for a total installed power of 15 MW and an average annual production of 70 GWh.

The acquisition of the plants, which were owned by IDREG Piemonte, has a total value of approximately 34 million euro and increases synergies with the activities that Edison already has on operation and maintenance of the plants in Piemonte and Friuli. With this acquisition, the hydroelectric power generation of Edison, which has an extensive experience in renewable energy production, comes to 72 hydroelectric plants, including large plants and mini-hydro. So Edison contributes to the effective implementation of a future low carbon content in line with the commitments made on the occasion of COP21 , the Paris Conference to fight climate change .

“The hydropower sector is strategic for Edison, who made the power generation with low CO2 emissions a strength of its growth strategy - said Marc Benayoun, CEO of Edison -. Today's task is going in this direction and fits into the groove of the recent acquisitions of hydroelectric power plants on the Cellina and Adda rivers. Without forgetting that it is part of our tradition since in the late 800 Edison developed hydropower for the first time in Europe.”

Operating in the hydropower sector since 1898, Edison has an extensive experience in renewable energy production. The Edison’s hydroelectric fleet consists of 72 [2] power plants with an installed capacity of 1,1 GW. In 2015 Edison hydroelectric power plants produced 3.5 TWh of electricity. Last year, Edison's generating fleet produced a total of 18.5 TWh through 48 hydroelectric plants, 19 thermoelectric power plants, 35 wind farms, 9 photovoltaic and 1 biomass plant.
