Bio Vega

Vega-A by Edison is a restocking oasis for molluscs, groupers, greater amberjacks, and grey triggerfish, according to the study carried out by the experts of the Isole Ciclopi Protected Marine Area of Acitrezza in Sicily. Edison allows people on board the Vega-A platform for the first time, to help them find out more about energy.

Pozzallo (Sicily), 28 June 2014 - Edison's Vega-A platform is a marine area for the restocking of animals and plans that were previously unseen in that area of the Strait of Sicily, according to BioVega, a project by the Isole Ciclopi Protected Marine Area of Acitrezza.

The project started last October with the work of a group of trained scuba divers, aimed at studying and sampling the fauna living around the Vega-A platform in the autumn.  More sampling took place in the last few days, in order to identify the species that live in the area during the summer.

The results have shown that an extraordinary rich and varied biodiversity has developed underneath the platform over the years: various species of Mediterranean fish, previously unseen in the area, such as groupers (Epinephelus Guaza), Chromis (Chromis chromis), black seabreams (Spondyliosoma cantharus), greater amberjacks (Seriola dumerili), grey triggerfish (Balistes Capriscus), are to be found in the area of sea around the platform; they were attracted by the fauna and the feeding opportunities that have developed in the area.

The sampling has identified as many as 17 mollusc species living underneath the platform, in layers up to nearly 8 inches thick.
