The sizeable investments made in recent years mean that Edison has one of the most modern
plant systems operating in Italy. The system is also largely based on the most efficient technology
currently available: Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT).
Edison's presence is also noteworthy in the renewable energy technology areas of hydro and
wind power; in 2009 the new 50 MW wind farm of Melissa (KR) went into operation.
With 41.6 billion kWh produced in 2009, Edison is Italy's second-largest sector operator,
having a market share of 15.0% of national output. Approximately 14% of the energy sold by the
Group is regulated by CIP6/92 contracts. Due to the spark spread strong decrease, Edison is
increasing the sales on the free market to eligible clients and wholesalers with bilateral
contracts; it has also dramatically reduced its operations on the spot market and increased
the purchases in the Electric Power Exchange (IPEX) in order to balance the sources / uses
ratio.
On October 5, 2009 the new electric power infrastructure connection between Italy and Switzerland has been put into operation; EL.IT.E, a company owned by Edison (48.45%), Raetia Energie (46.55%) And Tirano municipality (5%) is the company that built the line and runs it. The power line guarantees a 150 MW increase to the interconnection capacity between Italy and Switzerland.
