Since 1999, the normative contest, which came up with the liberalization of the electric energy market, imposed obligations of renewable energies for the operators who produce and import electric energy with the introduction of a incentive mechanism of market built with green certificates. The European Union as well has sent the directive 2001/77/CE, with the purpose of pressing the member states in the development of renewable sources. Italy has in fact the goal to reach within 2010 the 22% of the gross national product through energies from renewable sources. In 2004 the Italian production has been of about 55 TWh, floating value between 14,5% - 16% of the gross national production in relation with the Hydraulicity of the year considered.
On 23 rd January the European Commission has sent a proposal of directive on the promotion of the use of energies from renewable sources, which longs to aims more and more ambitious as for example the reaching of the 20% of the target for the share of renewables to 2020 referred to final consumptions. That goal will be shared in different ways among the States, considering the single aims according the PIL of each State. The goal proposed for Italy is the 17% of final consumptions from renewable within 2020, starting from 5,2% (year of reference 2005).
The renewable sources, then, have and will always have more importance in the energetic strategies of industrial countries because they represent a way to diversify both the mix of production of electric energy and the sources of supplying: water, wind and sun which are free combustibles and not subject of criticality of geopolitical nature able instead of affecting heavily the prices of fossil combustibles. Not only as the country Italy, but also as Edison, the renewable sources represent a way of reducing the exposition to the volatility of natural gas price, principal combustible used in the efficient power stations.
Edison wants to reach a big growth in the renewable sources field with new wind stations with the re – powering of the Hydroelectric stations existing and the development of smaller Hydroelectric stations. Edison will follow in the next future even initiatives in other areas in development as for example the photovoltaic and the biomasses.
